Hey there!

Welcome to the Always Never Right Podcast! We have drinks. We have games. We have sarcasm.

Episode 19 - John Hughes, James Bond & that douchebag Ross from "Friends"

What do you do when you look back at things you used to like and realize .... "EW????"  Get some drinks and some friends and dissect it, that's what.

We start with Bond, Jerk Bond, and it just gets worse from there.  On the upside, discussing the latent misogyny gives us a great excuse to try martinis!  Jill goes for a truly Bonderific Vesper, while dirty girl Gina goes heavy on the olives.

The Vesper

Gina and I decided we’d try different Martinis for this episode so this was my version. This tasty treat was apparently invented by Ian Flemming. Who knew he was so multi-talented? Bond drank this in Casino Royale. The instructions in the book are as follows, “Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?”

Ingredients-

  • 3 oz Gin (I went for the Botanist)

  • 1 oz Vodka

  • 1/2 oz Lillet Blanc

Instructions-

Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir (or, if preparing the Bond way, shake). Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Twist a slice of lemon peel over the drink, rub along the rim of the glass, and drop it in.

The Dirty Martini

Is Gina a dirty girl? Or is that a sexist thing to say? Don’t judge me. You don't get to judge me. Gina decided to go for the standard Martini, but she does like her briny olives and decided to make it a Dirty Martini. According to my sources, especially with this one you should always stir, not shake because shaking dilutes the ingredients. They also recommend adding the olive juice to the glass first, then to the shaker for a better swirl of flavor.

Ingredients-

  • 3 oz gin

  • 1/2 oz dry vermouth (Gina swears by Antikca Formula)

  • 1/2 oz olive juice

Swirl olive juice around glass, then add to cocktail shaker with other ingredients. Stir. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with as many olives as you’d like on a toothpick.
